The Nicholson round hand file is designed with single-cut American pattern teeth, making it suitable for filing holes and curves. The file's tapered shape towards the point facilitates easy access into holes. Its single-cut American pattern teeth are intended for finishing, sharpening, and deburring tasks. The file's tang can be used with an optional handle (sold separately) for secure gripping.

Hand files are versatile tools used to remove material, smooth, and shape workpieces. They feature forward-facing cutting teeth that cut when pushed over a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the file's width, while double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions.

American pattern files are available in three coarseness grades. The coarse, or bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. The medium, or second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. The fine, or smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish.

In contrast, Swiss pattern files offer a wider range of coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse) to 6 (finest), delivering a smoother and more precise finish than their American counterparts.
